Research

For 2024 and 2025 my active research projects are focused on 1) the New York State system of county poorhouses that operated in the mid 1800s-1900s, and 2) the domestication of rabbits/hares and pigs/boars throughout European history. Both projects are inspired by concerns for the future. In the first case, New York State and local governments are creating new policies regarding homeless and poor people that is reminiscent of past policies that created the flawed poorhouse system. In the second case, climate change is pushing formerly wild species towards increased interaction with humans and human-altered habitats. Such species are at risk of becoming domesticated. Pigs and rabbits can produce models of how some species can resist complete domestication, and more easily return to their wild form than other species like cows and horses.

During this time, I will continue my community-centered research as time allows.

Below is a list of technical reports that I have authored or coauthored. This provides a chronological history of projects undertaken, many of which did not result in publications.
